Let’s look at it deeply to understand low moods. This complex mixture of feelings keeps us drained of our energies for the whole day and sometimes this goes on for days on end and it doesn’t seem to stop. You must understand that everyone has low days, but the difference lies in the frequency of these days and the severity of the low mood. So Understanding Low Moods is important to overcome it. Don’t feel bad about your Low Moods. We have faced 100s of clients with this issue and helped them to overcome it. Just hold on and know before we dive in, You can live a happy and Healthy Life Coping with Low Moods People generally tend to push away such feelings, they don’t tell anyone or breathe a word about it but instead go on with their regular activities masking on with a perfect smile. There are times when there is too much pressure on us, that we forget to take in the cues of low mood and focus on meeting deadlines by forgetting to stop for a moment and think about our well-being. These people feel burdened over a while and begin to compare their troubles with those who ‘have it all’ For instance, a smiling, full-of-energy photo you view on your social media of a long-forgotten friend triggers a negative response, as you think inwardly of the current situation you are in. Making up Assumptions These triggers make you assume that happiness is a personality type that can only be achieved by a select few and you can’t have it or you simply are not capable of it. This making up of assumptions tends to happen as we again associate low moods as a problem with ourselves, and tag it as our nature of being. There are yet some who blame it on their genes and family histories, they do not believe they can change it so they carry on with their usual routine, smiling back at those who smile and do things they are assigned all the while when that low mood keeps them anchored in depths of sorrow and frustration of being the way they are. This drowns them into an empty feeling that makes them see the world in grey and white devoid of any colour. Taking A Moment to Yourself In such a situation, take a pause and notice a simple change in yourself, like the growth in your nails and your hair, maybe you would want to trim your nails. Put on a new nail colour after filing the edges into a perfect shape or try a different hairstyle as you’ve outgrown the previous one. In this natural bodily growth, you have the power to make the change you want to see in yourself. Likewise, it is with your mood changes. The reason you are experiencing a low mood may be influenced by several factors such as the forgotten overgrown nails in your hands or a hairstyle that was ignored for so long, maybe a visit to the salon would help, or something else could assist you to find your way out of the feeling that weighs you down constantly. This ultimately symbolizes that you have the power within you to create the change you wish to see, and you can make a drastic comeback in your emotional well-being provided you stopped for a moment to care for yourself. It also doesn’t mean that low moods are negative responses that you must rid of your system completely. They are natural processes that are a part of life, as quoted below: “Life is made up of sobs, sniffles, and smiles, with sniffles predominating.” -O’Henry The power to change the way you constantly feel can become your personalised toolbox to deal with your challenges in life, if however, you are overwhelmed with low mood and nothing you do helps you endure, it is best you learn new skills with a professional’s guidance and support. Always remember to take that moment for yourself towards self-care without any guilt. The Downward Spiral You don’t have to control your thoughts; you just have to stop letting them control you. – Dan Millman Tracing your steps to understand low moods When you experience a low mood, try and trace your step to the time when that feeling crept in. It might be the morning rush hour when you have to get ready and your child talks about a missing sock, while the bread is in the toaster and you have not yet gotten ready for work. You want to be organized and relaxed but no one lends you a hand or coordinates with your wishes that you lose your cool and experience an outburst. It feels like the extremity of stress where you have no control over your actions during that time, as the signals sent to your brain are making you feel uncomfortable. It is important we know that our brains provide meaning to what we experience from past events and feelings we might have felt in certain situations based on our senses and a reaction is triggered when a similar situation is replayed. An Impossible positive mindset While most people would direct you to change the way you think in turn to solve your problems. It often keeps us spiraling downward as our feelings influence our thoughts directly. Let’s assume you didn’t care much about your diet plan for a long time and ate whatever you could find while being aware of its harmful effects on your overall health, your mood keeps you low and further increases your state of lethargic behavior that results in a casual attitude. This is the downward spiral of low mood that keeps you trapped in an endless cycle. “We don’t experience our thoughts, bodily sensations, emotions, and actions separately. We experience them together as one. Like wicker strands woven together…” – Dr. Julie Smith A way Out Overcome Low Moods Therefore, since there is constant communication between the brain, body, and our environment. We can use it to our advantage by influencing how we feel. To start, we begin by raising our awareness of the mood changes, like looking at ourselves in the mirror with a different perspective by looking within, jotting down in a journal each moment, reflecting on the moment that we felt overwhelmed, what were the reasons behind and how these could have been changed. As you write them down, you notice a small awakening in the reaction-response of the situations around you, as you prepare to exit from the downward spiral through your conscious efforts for betterment.
